Biography
- A graduate of the Bordeaux Institute of Political Studies, Bernard Cazeneuve is a lawyer. He was a member of several ministerial cabinets between 1991 and 1993: technical advisor to the Secretary of State in charge of International Cultural Relations, chief of staff of Alain Vivien (Secretary of State in charge of Foreign Affairs), and chief of staff of Charles Josselin (Secretary of State for the Sea). In 1994, Bernard Cazeneuve was elected general councilor of Octeville (1994), then mayor of Octeville (1995-2000), and won the legislative elections in the 5th constituency of Manche in 1997. While in 2000, the communes Octeville and Cherbourg merge, he becomes mayor of Cherbourg-Octeville (2001-2012). From 2008 to 2012, he was also President of the Cherbourg Urban Community. Between 2004 and 2007, he served as First Vice-President of the Lower Normandy Region. Alongside his elected functions, Bernard Cazeneuve became a titular judge of the High Court of Justice and the Court of Justice of the Republic (1997-2002). As part of the 2012 presidential election, he was designated as one of François Hollande's four spokespersons. He was appointed, on May 16, 2012, Minister Delegate for European Affairs, then on March 19, 2013, Minister Delegate for the Budget. On April 2, 2014, during a ministerial reshuffle, he became Minister of the Interior, a position he held until December 2016. Bernard Cazeneuve was then appointed Prime Minister by François Hollande, until his resignation. from his government on May 10, 2017. He then joined the AUGUST DEBOUZY firm as an associate lawyer. Beyond his activity as a lawyer, he chairs the board of directors of Sciences Po Bordeaux and teaches a course on “France facing the challenges of the fight against terrorism” at Sciences Po Paris. Born June 2, 1963 in Senlis, Bernard Cazeneuve is married and father of two children. In June 2015, he was elevated to the rank of Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit of the Kingdom of Spain by King Felipe VI. In January 2016, he was awarded the Grand Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by German Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière. He was elevated to the rank of Commander of the Legion of Honor by decree of July 12, 2017 from President Emmanuel Macron.
